The Alberta Icon Passport was created in 2010 as a way to promote icons in communities throughout the province. The project is spearheaded by Woodlands County after its council thought a passport would be a great way to get more visitors to its icon – the World’s Largest Wagon Wheel and Pick Axe. The passport would also help smaller communities like itself.
In the first year, 24 communities participated in the passport project. Each community paid to be a part of the project to help with the initial start up costs. Grant money was also received from Travel Alberta to help launch the passport.
The idea of the passport is that visitors go to each community to see the unique and interesting icons and get their passport stamped at the locations noted in the passport. Then the visitors mail in their passport for a chance to win prizes. For the 2011 year, prizes are being sponsored by the Alberta Motor Association.
Passports are available at most Tourism Information Centres in Alberta or can be downloaded from this website.
